International Day for South-South Cooperation By Dr Arvind Kumar 19 December is observed as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation annually to commemorate the date when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly endorsed a plan of action in 1978 to promote and implement technical cooperation among developing countries. In 1978 the UN General Assembly established the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation on a global level. It was on 23 December 2003 that the UN General Assembly declared 19 December as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation to mark the date when the Assembly endorsed the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries. The diplomatic row between India and the United States over the arrest of Indian diplomat is a sad development for the future of Indo-US relations. The crisis got triggered with the sudden arrest and temporary detention in New York on 11 December this year of Devyani Khobragade, an Indian deputy consul general, on the charge of visa fraud and false statements in connection with household employee’s visa application. Such a bizarre behavior on the part of US authorities is unbecoming of a great power and it sets bad precedent for the diplomats of other countries posted in Washington or New York. WTO Deal By Dr Arvind Kumar India’s refusal to accept a four-year ‘peace clause’ for ostensibly breaching farm subsidy caps under the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) has been vindicated at at the recently held meeting of WTO at Bali (Indonesia). The germane issue here is not about our sovereign right to provide unlimited agricultural subsidies or to keep them insulated from the global rules of trade. The problem lies – and those accusing India of having played a deal-breaking role would do well to take a closer look at them – in the AoA’s rules itself, which are hopelessly flawed and outdated. Fortunately, the Indian position – that the ‘peace clause’ remains in force until a permanent solution is found to food security and, indirectly, the farm subsidy computation issue – has prevailed at the Bali ministerial meet. It is a just victory. However, civil societies in Asia are calling for an end to the WTO and pushing for alternatives. #WTO #India #C

Mandela’s Legacy Dr Arvind Kumar With the passing away of Nelson Mandela, the world has lost ‘an icon of the 20th century and a leader who had a larger-than-life figure. He will always be remembered for insisting on the dignity of all humanity, and for refusing to give in to baser instincts. He brought an end to apartheid without sparking a civil war, an outcome many thought inevitable. With is passing away, South Africa has lost its father; the world has lost a hero and one of the greatest humans of our time. He was a towering figure who dedicated his entire life to establishing and defending the noble values. Sadly, our contemporary world has seen few figures of the calibre of Nelson Mandela. His tenacity in the face of overwhelming opposition and his unswerving commitment to the value and importance of human dignity and integrity will continue to find him a unique place in human history. Drinking from plastic bottles or cups gives Migraine Attack, According to Times of India report Drinking water directly from plastic cups or bottles could be giving millions of people around the world a serious headache. New research has confirmed that a chemical in synthetic packaging triggers migraines. Bisphenol A (BPA) which has been linked to obesity , infertility and heart attacks has now been confirmed through toxicological studies to be a serious trigger for a serious prolonged bout of migraine. Researchers at the  University of Kansas Medical Center  reported a 24% increased risk for overall cardiovascular disease in men who experienced migraines  compared to those who did not including a 42% increase in heart attack risk. The findings suggest that  migraine  sufferers might be able to reduce the frequency and severity of their headaches by changing their habits.
