World Sanitation (Toilet) Day

Image
By Dr Arvind Kumar Absence of basic sanitation amenities force the people to urinate and defecate into open which exposes them to ridicule, shame, and, for women and girls, the risk of physical attack, marginalisation and stigmatisation. Furthermore, costs of treating water and sanitation related diseases drain national budgets and family finances.  About 2.6 billion people - 40% of world's population do not have access to adequate sanitation and this will become worse with the fast growing population, particularly in rapidly expanding urban areas. The provision of proper toilets could save the lives of more than 200,000 children in the world, according to the UN. The countries where open defecation is most widely practiced are the same countries with the highest numbers of under-five child deaths, high levels of under-nutrition and poverty, and large wealth disparities. Moreover, over one billion people defecate in the open due to lack of proper toilet facilities.

Remembering Gandhi Ji & Shastri Ji

Remembering Gandhi Ji & Shastri Ji “According to the World Health Organization, an average of Rs. 6500 per person was lost in India due to lack of cleanliness and hygiene. Swachh Bharat would make a significant impact on public health and in safeguarding income of the poor, ultimately contributing to the national economy.”  “Cleaning up the country cannot be the sole responsibility of sweepers. Do citizens have no role in this? We have to change this mindset.”                                                                                                      – Narendra Modi A grateful nation celebrates today the birth anniversary of Gandh Ji, Father of the Nation. It has become a ritual with the powers that be either at the Centre or States to pay courtesy call at Rajghat and offer garlands as a token of tributes to the departed noble soul. Gandhi Ji did not lay down his life for earning these rituals. He never clamoured for any coveted office and rather led a life

Meghalaya’s Food Security Act: A Precedent of Commitment in Good Governance Dr Sangma called for better work culture in the State to ensure better implementation of projects. “If government employees work in the right spirit, then the implementation of the programme will be in right earnest and benefit the people”, said Sangma, while launching the Statewide National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) and National Food Security Mission at Tura. Sangma stated that the delay in the launch of the Act was due to many factors. “We wanted to reach out to the most needy, based on the socio-economic census. After due diligence, the process was completed to benefit the people. We have incorporated every section of the society and the people, who are entitled to benefit as mandated in the programme.” Further, the CM stated  while launching food security act of Meghalaya, that the government would work on a policy for recruitment in government jobs to ensure no room for ‘inefficient

International Women’s Day

Image
International Women’s Day #Dr.ArvindKumar 8 th March, celebrated as International Women's Day (IWD) every year globally, marks this year the centenary of the declaration and observation of the first International Women's day. The first official celebration of Women's Day happened on 19 March in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On this day, organizations, governments and women's groups choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues. IWD this year’s theme is "#MakeitHappen". In India, International Women's Day is all about celebrating a woman and paying tribute to the multi-roles she plays in life. IWD encourages us to consider steps to bring about equality for women and girls in all their diversity and to celebrate the collective power of women past, present and future. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organizations, governments, charities, e

Netaji’s Birth Day

Image
Netaji’s Birth Day 23rd January is observed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary. It is ironic that this day is not observed with much enthusiasm throughout the country like the birth anniversaries of other great men and women who laid down their lives at the altar of freedom. Similar national apathy is seen in the case of other great freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Lala Lajpat Rai and others. Instead of regarding these great patriots as ‘National Heroes’, they have been relegated to the regions where they were born. There seems a political motivation behind such unhealthy moves. In the course of struggle for freedom Netaji formed Azad Hind Government and led the Indian National Army. He advocated a revolutionary and violent way to protest as opposed to non-violent approach by Mahatma Gandhi. Following the differences with Mahatma Gandhi he separated from Indian National Congress (INC) and founded his own party on 3 May 193
