International Women’s Day #Dr.ArvindKumar 8 th March, celebrated as International Women's Day (IWD) every year globally, marks this year the centenary of the declaration and observation of the first International Women's day. The first official celebration of Women's Day happened on 19 March in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On this day, organizations, governments and women's groups choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues. IWD this year’s theme is "#MakeitHappen". In India, International Women's Day is all about celebrating a woman and paying tribute to the multi-roles she plays in life. IWD encourages us to consider steps to bring about equality for women and girls in all their diversity and to celebrate the collective power of women past, present and future. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organizations, governments, charities, e...

Netaji’s Birth Day

Image
Netaji’s Birth Day 23rd January is observed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary. It is ironic that this day is not observed with much enthusiasm throughout the country like the birth anniversaries of other great men and women who laid down their lives at the altar of freedom. Similar national apathy is seen in the case of other great freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Lala Lajpat Rai and others. Instead of regarding these great patriots as ‘National Heroes’, they have been relegated to the regions where they were born. There seems a political motivation behind such unhealthy moves. In the course of struggle for freedom Netaji formed Azad Hind Government and led the Indian National Army. He advocated a revolutionary and violent way to protest as opposed to non-violent approach by Mahatma Gandhi. Following the differences with Mahatma Gandhi he separated from Indian National Congress (INC) and founded his own party on 3 May 193...

Beginning of New Era: WorldToiletDay 2014, 19 November #Dr.ArvindKumar Does your town need new public toilets? Are the toilets safe and accessible, clean and well-maintained? Is there an appropriate ratio of toilets for men and women, or ‘potty parity’? Discuss about toilets with your local representative today. According to 2008 estimates, 466 million people lack access to improved water sources and 1.87 billion people lack access to improved sanitation in Asia and the Pacific. Unrestrained access to safe and potable water is vital for human life. Inadequate access to improved sanitation facilities, coupled with poor hygienic practices, allows diseases to spread, leading to impoverishment and diminished opportunities. The word “toilet” was considered a taboo and the sanitation crisis was largely ignored by the media. In the humanitarian sector, the subject of water and sanitation was bundled into one agenda called WatSan. This resulted in sanitation being oversha...
