Day is celebrated on 1st of July to honour the legendary physician
and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years.
Dr Roy was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on
February 4, 1961. The first Doctor's Day observance was March 30, 1933 in
Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond,
decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included
the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red
carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctor's Day.
