Bansagar canal project: Better late than never By Dr. Arvind Kumar Source: www.india-wris.nrsc.gov.in PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bansagar Canal Project in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh on 15 th July 2018. It is a much delayed project with the foundation stone being laid way back in 1978. A joint venture between Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, this project has a total canal network of 171 Kms and will bring water from the Bansagar Dam in Sahadol district of Madhya Pradesh to the Adwa Barrage, Meza Dam and Jirgo reservoir. The project is estimated to irrigate 1,50,132 hectares of land and benefit 1 lakh 70 thousand farmers in Mirzapur and Allahabad districts. The project will also supply 5.65million cubic meters of water for domestic purposes. It remains to be seen how, a project that was delayed for 4 decades and cost a whooping Rs3500crores to complete, benefits the people of the region.
