PM Narendra Modi
inaugurated the Bansagar Canal Project in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh on 15th
July 2018. It is a much delayed project with the foundation stone being laid
way back in 1978. A joint venture between Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and
Bihar, this project has a total canal network of 171 Kms and will bring water
from the Bansagar Dam in Sahadol district of Madhya Pradesh to the Adwa
Barrage, Meza Dam and Jirgo reservoir. The project is estimated to irrigate 1,50,132
hectares of land and benefit 1 lakh 70 thousand farmers in Mirzapur and
Allahabad districts. The project will also supply 5.65million cubic meters of
water for domestic purposes.
It remains to be
seen how, a project that was delayed for 4 decades and cost a whooping
Rs3500crores to complete, benefits the people of the region. According
to the Planning Commission, Mirzapur is one of the most disadvantaged districts
of the country with more than 50% of the people living below poverty line. With
almost negligible sources of irrigation and the seasonal onslaught of heat
wave, cold wave, hail storms and rising frequency of droughts, the agriculture
of the region is heavily suffering. No doubt the Bansagar canal project comes
as a boon for the ailing agricultural sector of the district, but only time
will tell the true benefits of the project.
